Across the Floor is so nostalgic of my time growing up on the East Coast. I have visited Grand Central Station many times and remember it being one of the most magical moments. The train gets quiet and everything goes dark as you enter the underground tunnel. As you exit, passengers push against each other through the hot, humid platforms and then you emerge to find yourself under the constellations. Being surrounded by so many people who don't seem to keep still long enough to enjoy it, but I could always take a deep breath in this moment. This print captures the bustle and beauty of this iconic New York City experience.

Tomura's simple, beautiful drypoint is reminiscent of Rembrandt's depiction of leaves and trees. Tomura captures lively nature with minimal details. The image is barely there. Just a few light strokes for the grass, gentle texture in the leaves and clean lines for the trunks. Tomura leaves most of the sheet blank to focus on the thing you can't see: the wind.

The 'Alchemy of Love' series is captivating, and this piece in particular can lock me in an endless loop. There's a little contradiction – using text and words to tell us 'There are no words here'. My mind can go over that detail again and again. In the end, I love it because this simple contradiction reveals how hard it is to express ourselves or our experiences. We have only words to describe the indescribable. Landsaat also offers twisted vines, knotted branches, and eccentric demons to help us visualize our predicament, but the rest is left to us.

With mid-September's Harvest Moon and partial lunar eclipse, I've been thinking about the moon a lot lately. This linocut by Artemio Rodriguez simply and beautifully captures the whimsical serenity of admiring the moon in the deep night sky. The crescent's lovely face makes her feel like a dear friend, enjoying a quiet rest above Earth's rocky terrain.

Aoki is so good at showcasing the human experience.To me, this piece encapsulates so much of the dynamic between anyone in relation to another. It could be between two coworkers, two friends, two lovers, two family members, or two strangers. The focus is on two fingers pointing at one another, accusingly, but the space between their curved bodies and their defensive opposite hands tell more of the story. It’s what isn’t said and how our bodies react to another’s accusations that tend to fill up negative space in a relationship.

In the 'Light Time Silence’ series, Yamamoto creates mysterious spaces that are both blank and full of meaning. A story with one too many details missing. Chairs placed (or abandoned?) in front of windows. Spaces empty of signifiers. ‘Light Time Silence #17’ is slightly different because there are more objects that whisper about this type of place and its type of person. We don’t know where they’ve gone, but their dishes are drying next to the sink. We don’t know where this room is but it seems to be in an old building. As we enter a space that we believe to be a home, we turn our focus to who owns this chair, who belongs in this chair. We think about what is needed to make a space into a home because we can see that this blank space has the proper foundation, but an uncanny neutrality, an absence. A home without a heart. A place without its people.

There are so many of Phil Greenwood's images that I am drawn to, it is hard to pick just one. His luscious colors sing and merge into a cohesive landscape. He does the impossible and prints just two or three color plates wet, so that the colors unfold with creative, complex relationships. Subtle tonal variations are accomplished by his expert handling of aquatint and etching. Taking inspiration from his surrounding English landscapes, Greenwood makes scenes look new and exciting yet familiar all at once, like the nightly moon shining fresh patterns onto the meadow below.

Obata’s piece is delightfully charming. It’s as though I am looking through a window I wiped condensation off of to better see the snowfall outside. A pet dog is even reflected in one of the streaking, water droplets. The winter scene feels comforting and cozy, complete with a tiny bird flying around the dormant trees in the snow.

The VW Bus is charming all on its own, but Lockwood Dennis’s version is even better. His woodcut style blends so well with the simple, graphic nature of the bus. This piece is not trying to be perfect, it's just trying to show its true character. It has plenty of nostalgia in the best way, showing a love for the bold graphics of the ad era when sleek and minimal had yet to reign.

Peter Jogo’s mastery of color mezzotint never ceases to amaze. He expertly replicates sharp angles of light refractions in the glass vase of water, while simultaneously capturing the soft glow of light reaching us from behind the delicately overlapping flower petals. Rather than relying on the stark black and white of most traditional mezzotints, Jogo effectively employs the triadic harmony of purple, orange, and green to tie the full composition together. As summer winds down, this beautifully portrayed bouquet of cut flowers reminds us to enjoy the last rays of sunshine before fall arrives.

Gordon Mortensen achieves incredible realism and brilliance in his reduction woodcuts, a process that is complex and requires intricate planning on the part of the artist. “Evening Gold” is less detailed than many of his larger pieces, but draws and keeps your gaze as much as his well known floral landscapes. Bold blocks of color and subtle gradients make up an impossibly luminous landscape. The soft pink in the water floats, the purple in the background is deep and cool, and the golden grass shines blindingly bright. All together, this impressionistic and almost abstract scene feels at once peaceful and magnificently beautiful.

"Seoul (Sohee) Kim writes about her art as a playful engagement with alienating and ironic realities though imaginary space. Much of her work faces scenes such as packed train cars and claustrophobic workspaces, where bored and tired figures coexist with magical elements from her imagination. While humorous, much of her work conveys a sense of melancholy and anxiety, using a pastel color pallet, figures depicted in uncomfortable positions, and almost hallucinatory symbolism. “A Box for Rest Time” is as chaotic, muted, and claustrophobic as her other work, but it fills me with more peace and comfort than any other emotion. A figure sleeps in a box, filled to the brim with a messy bed, and next to them sleeps an oversized cat. I too want to hide away from the world and find sanctuary in a little box and a big bed with a big sleepy cat. There one finds safety, dreamless sleep, and rest beyond imagination."

"I find 'Elston Ave.' so interesting because it's a compression of a place into one image. To describe the experience of an entire city street is impossible, but here we see a version of Elston Avenue through the artist's eyes. "Terrain / 4 Directions is one of Mary Farrell’s largest and most intricate pieces featuring her iconic portrayal of hands. Reduction woodcut is a notoriously complex technique that requires a great deal of planning. And yet, Farrell conveys a sense of fluid immediacy with the sensitive and sketch-like quality of the forearms and hands. They dance together with strength, grace, and perpetual motion, while the background texture calls to mind both fingerprints and rippling water. Like fish gathered together and circling in a whirlpool, the hands engage in an animated, yet unspoken conversation. I see their vibrant, intertwined outlines as a representation of the vitality and connectedness of all living things."

Ivan Rusachek’s dreamlike etchings deliver the viewer into a liminal world. In “Full Moon - 100 Years of Solitude,” he references the magic realist masterpiece of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The woman depicted in this etching looks right into the viewer, much the way characters from Marquez’s novel see through time and even their own narrative. The symbol of the moon is at once a window into into the world and a shield from it. Rusachek’s interpretation of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” exemplify his ability to translate the essence of ephemeral stories that touch the heart of humanity, conveying meaning while retaining complex mystery.

"Starfish are symbolic of divine and endless love. These celestial beings sweep the background of Asahi’s highly technical etching. The little blue-eyed starfish serve as helpful and loving guides as the central female figure pours out the ocean from a shell as she sits on the back of a flying dragon. There is an energy to the piece, despite the artist including only tiny pops of color in the eyes and small details of each creature. Instead, linework and shape build the composition’s movement and playfulness. Each line etched into the plate is carefully scratched to give swirling loops to the water, striking contrast to the dragon scales, and delicate curves on the woman’s body. A visual boost of warm and energetic feelings."

"Tetsuo Aoki is a master of illustrating people, relationships, and emotions. This woodcut in particular speaks volumes about the world today. The figure's back is arched in order to put their head in their exaggerated hands. The posture speaks to the angst and despondency of the main figure, as does the darkness of the ink. Meanwhile, through the gap we can see other people walking by as if all is normal. In the Hand is a small and intimate woodcut that mirrors how I feel while overwhelmed by these tragic events."

"Toru Sugita is a California-based Japanese artist and teacher who creates a variety of landscape and city scene prints. He has spent years thinking about changing light and is an expert at capturing each specific type of light that is unique to a place and a moment. On My Balcony I is a beautiful, simple wood engraving that captures a very individual scene: "my" balcony. It isn't lavish or curated; it isn't full of lush plants or exciting people - it's simple and sincere. The intimate process of carving a wood block is felt in this small piece. I feel the block's texture and the quiet moments that the artist spent with it.
