Lockwood Dennis (American, 1937–2012) was born and raised in Portland, OR. He earned a BA in Philosophy from Whitman College in 1960 and an MA in Philosophy from the University of Washington in 1963. Dennis pursued his interest in painting, receiving a Junior Fellowship from the School of Fine Arts in Boston in 1968.

After his return and settlement in Port Townsend in 1970, Dennis was an invested member of the Northwest arts
community. Drawing inspiration from his time in Portland, Washington, California, Colorado, and Japan, his works often depict industrial scenes and natural landscapes.

Burn Rubber highlights Dennis’ keen eye for the iconic shape of the 1930s and 40s motor vehicle. Dennis looked to express humor and beauty within the form and function of everyday life. By placing these classic beauties in nostalgic Seattle scenes, he invites viewers to slow down in a world that is constantly speeding up.
